Is HostGator Web Hosting Any Good?

by Daniel Roberts
Dec.12, 2008 in Internet

Being the semi-webmaster that I am, here’s a question I get commonly asked: Where should I host my websites? Well, unfortunately there’s no real easy answer. There’s no go-to No. 1. Much like getting different opinions from different doctors on an ailment, you will usually get many different answers on web hosting depending on who you ask.

One thing is for certain, these days with competition in the hosting industry so fierce along with a drop in storage and bandwidth costs, you can get good quality web hosting at a very affordable price. For someone looking to host a site or even multiple sites you shouldn’t have to pay more than $10 a month to get what you need when it comes to hosting.

What To Look For in a Web Host
Now when I am searching for a new host for my websites, or a host for my additional websites (I don’t like keeping all my sites under one roof!), among the things I look for in a hosting company is have been around for a while? Do they have a forum on their site? Is there a toll-free support phone number? And how many accounts do they host? Let’s face it, if you’re hosting a lot of accounts that means you must be doing something right, so I look at that as that is a plus.

There are those who would argue that that’s a negative and in some ways it might be because of overselling. But for me, when it comes to hosting I do find strength in numbers. Though your mileage may vary. One company that fits my profile is Hostgator.com. Hostgator has been around for about seven years now and I’ve had multiple accounts and had multiple sites hosted with them. And they do a great job. Are they the best? Some people will say yes. Some people will say no, but regardless bottom line for me is, they do the job with my smaller sites. And when there is an issue support usually quick to handle it.

Plus there’s the forum if I need to vent. So when things go wrong – and now matter where you host they will – at least you have multiple avenues to go down to get answers.

HostGator Value
And Hostgator’s price is tough to beat. Right now you can sign up for hostgator under their “Baby Croc” plan for $7.95 a month,  which allows you to host as many websites as you want under one single account. So if you have let’s say just one website you can do that, or if you have 50 websites you can also host with them for the same price of $7.95 a month. You might event be able to lower that cost tough coupons and promo codes, but either way that’s a great deal.

Keep in mind, though, websites hosted under their smaller plans shouldn’t be sites that bring in a large amount of traffic sites or are overly server intensive like a vBulletin forum. But a simple, dynamic sites with a few thousand uniques a day should be okay. (Hostgator also offers reseller acounts and dedicated servers.)

No Contracts
Host gator also offers unlimited disk space, unlimited bandwidth and even have a 45-day moneyback guarantee. Why I also recommend Hostgator is that they price month-to-month, so there’s no long-term contract that you are tied up in. That way if you find at any time that their service is no good you’re not locked in. And I think that’s a great model and I give them high marks for doing business that way.

Summary
So in closing if you’re looking for a host be sure to check out host gator and see what they offer. Maybe they meet your needs, maybe they don’t, but if you’re trying to find a good home for your website it’s best to do some due diligence and visit as many hosting companies as you can so you can make an informed decision.
