Minimum Down Payment on Buying a Home

by Staff
Aug.01, 2008 in Finance, Home

So just what is the minimum down payment you can make on a home? There is generally no minimum down payment required for buying a home, but remember the more you put down, the less your monthly payment will be.

First-time buyers believe they must be able to put down 20 percent of a home’s purchase price in cash — which may have been true in the past, but many of the mortgage options available today require little or no down payment.

When housing prices soared with the housing bubble, home ownership would have been nearly impossible for many people if not for low-down-payment options. But now that housing prices have declined and foreclosures risen, getting the right loan can be difficult.

Mortgage companies have a number of loan programs that can help you buy a home with little or no cash.
